Becoming a 写作中心 Tutor

写作中心

The 写作中心 tutor training course, EN303H, Honors: Peer Tutoring Project, is 2024年秋季满员. 

We seek tutors from across the curriculum, so that the 写作中心 can reflect the range of disciplines in our liberal arts curriculum. 未来的导师应该 be skilled, confident, and highly thoughtful readers and writers; they should be able to listen well and patiently, interact adaptively and productively with peers and instructors, maintain excellent work habits, and bring fresh ideas and approaches 对他们的工作.

Any student may apply to become a 写作中心 tutor: simply fill out the application 下面. The Fall 2024 course is currently full; for Fall 2025, please submit an application 2025年2月或3月. 

A 写作 sample and a 教师的建议 are required for all applicants. (见 “重要的笔记” at the end of the application.)

The training practicum is fully funded: while you are enrolled in EN 303H, your observation and tutoring hours (4 hours a week beginning in mid-September) will be compensated 以勤工俭学的方式. To be paid, students must satisfy work eligibility requirements set out by Student Employment. 

Those selected as prospective tutors must register for the peer-tutor training course, EN 303H, The Peer Tutoring Project, taught by 写作中心 导演 L. 凯特琳约根森. 请 note that the course is offered only in the fall. Here is the course description:

“. . .it is not the 英语 language that hurts me,” bell hooks says, “but what the oppressors do with it, how they shape it to become a territory that limits and defines, how they make it a weapon that can shame, humiliate, colonize” (“Teaching New Worlds /新单词”). hooks then quotes Adrienne Rich: “This is the oppressor’s language yet I need it to talk to you.” Justice-focused teaching and tutoring of 英语 requires 体贴. In EN 303H, Peer Tutoring Project, we learn a toolbox of strategies for tutoring, including ways to structure sessions and respond to tutees’ expressed 担忧. We learn Standard Academic 英语, even as we acknowledge its racist and ableist foundations, and consider ways to negotiate the meanings and demands of “academic 写作.”

Much of the course is devoted to experiential learning, first through shadowing experienced tutors and then through independently tutoring in the 写作中心. 在我们班 meetings, we will consider the roles of 写作中心s; strategies for effective tutoring sessions, including techniques for supporting student writers whose first language is not 英语; the problematic position of Standard Written 英语; approaches to papers from various disciplines; and methods for explaining grammatical and punctuation 的指导方针. Some class sessions will be small-group meetings to assess progress, to 汇报,并制定计划. Coursework involves reading and discussion in 写作中心 theory and practice, short reflective papers, a research paper, and four hours a week (compensated) in the 写作中心.
