Skidmore Digital Privacy Statement

Skidmore College is committed to respecting your privacy. This privacy statement governs the collection and use of information collected through official Skidmore websites and other Skidmore digital properties. 

This Privacy Policy explains the information that Skidmore College gathers, why we collect this information, and how we use the information.

1. INFORMATION GATHERING AND USE OF INFORMATION
   
   
   1. Personally Identifiable Information
      
      Skidmore will not collect personally identifiable information (PII) about you when you visit our websites or digital properties unless you voluntarily provide us with that information. For the purposes of this policy, PII may include, but is not limited to: a user’s name, email address, IP address, Skidmore identifiers (ID number, class year, etc.) mailing or home address, phone numbers, employment information, academic information or other information that identifies a user personally. Skidmore may request users to voluntarily provide PII and, in doing so, the user is providing Skidmore with permission to use the information for the stated purpose and in accordance with this policy. PII may be requested, for example, to access a password-protected website, join a mailing list, download admissions marketing materials, or engage in a payment transaction.
      
      Skidmore may use that information for such purposes as fulfilling your requests for our information or services, communicating information that may be of interest to you, improving our services, and conducting research surveys. Skidmore will not share your information with third parties except as set forth below under "Sharing Your Information."

      If you use any comment or form submission functions on our site, any PII you submit can be read, collected, or used by other users of these tools, and could be used to send you unsolicited messages. We are not responsible for the PII you choose to submit in these forums.
      
      
   3. How We Use Information Collected From Web Visitors
      

      
      Examples of how PII and/or aggregate data collected by Skidmore College sites and services may be used include, but are not limited to, the following:

      —  For editorial and feedback purposes;
      —  To enable outreach to audiences such as prospective students, event attendees, enrolled students, staff and faculty members, alumni, and retirees;
      —  To aid in statistics analysis of a visitor’s online behavior for website development;
      —  To enable analysis of trends;
      —  For administration of the site;
      —  For the development of usage statistics;
      —  To gather demographic information;
      —  For website page/content and layout customization;
      —  To offer assistance, web or printed materials, services, and support upon request;
      —  To provide College-related events, news, publications, and other opportunities;
      —  For fundraising activities;
      —  To perform outreach and marketing about the College;
      —  To consider an application for admission to the College.

      In addition, names, postal and e-mail addresses, and phone numbers provided by visitors via online forms may be added to Skidmore’s database(s). This information may be used for correspondence, e-mail, or other uses consistent with Skidmore’s business practices and/or academic mission. Skidmore may also use such information to provide users with notifications concerning College and community events.

   4. Non-Personally Identifiable Information
      
      

      When you visit Skidmore websites and other Skidmore digital properties, we may automatically collect and store information sent by your web browser, such as IP addresses (i.e., the Internet address of your computer) in server logs. We also collect standard information about your computer (such as your web browser and operating system) and about your usage of our websites and digital properties (such as pages visited, length of visit, and search queries). This information, which does not identify you personally, is aggregated and used to help diagnose problems and suggest points for improving parts of our website and digital properties. For example, we utilize website analytics software to identify which parts of our website are most heavily used.

   5. Cookies
      
      

      Cookies are small pieces of data automatically stored in a user’s browser when a website is visited. Skidmore College may place cookies on a visitor’s computer to store information about visitor preferences, record user-specific information on pages accessed or visited, customize web page content based on browser type or device, or to present visitors with content or advertisements about Skidmore College on other web pages they subsequently visit.

      Users can set their browsers to receive notification when a website sends them a cookie so they may accept or reject it. Note that some parts of the College website may not function properly, or may be considerably slower if cookies are rejected.

2. SHARING YOUR INFORMATION
   

   
   In cases when Skidmore has personally identifiable information (PII) about you, we will not sell, rent, or share that PII with unnecessary third parties and will treat it in compliance with other related institutional policies and federal and state laws and regulations. Skidmore may share PII with authorized third parties for the purposes of providing services or when required to comply with legal and/or law enforcement requirements.

3. BEHAVIORAL ADVERTISING AND MARKETING
   
   

   Skidmore may contract with third-party vendors to show our advertisements on non-Skidmore websites and digital properties. Skidmore and third-party vendors with whom we contract may use cookies and web beacons to serve our ads based on your prior visit(s) to Skidmore websites and digital properties and to assess the effectiveness of our ads. This is also called Targeted Advertising or Interest-Based Advertising.

   These techniques use only non-personally identifiable information, and you may opt out of behavioral advertising by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page.

   Skidmore College is firmly committed to data security. To restrict unauthorized access and to ensure data integrity and security, Skidmore College implements physical, electronic, and administrative policies and procedures intended to safeguard information the College collects and/or stores. However, the College cannot assure or warrant absolute data security.

5. THIRD PARTY SITES
   
   

   Skidmore websites and digital properties may link to external sites that are not controlled by Skidmore. Your use of such websites will be subject to the privacy statements of those websites, which we encourage you to read. Skidmore is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such websites and does not make any representations about them.

   By visiting Skidmore College sites and services, you consent to the collection, storage, and dissemination of PII and aggregate data as described above. We reserve the right to modify this privacy policy at any time.
