Critical Thinking on the World Stage
Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies (LACLAS) is an interdisciplinary program at Skidmore College that seeks to create an intellectual community in which students acquire a well-rounded knowledge of Latin American, Caribbean, and Latina/o/e/x communities and their geographies, histories, and cultures. Students learn to develop questions and think critically about the issues that such communities face from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Dynamism and Community
LACLAS offers a space for students, faculty, and staff interested in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Latinx U.S. to come together, learn from each other, build community, and promote a feeling of belonging. LACLAS seeks to fulfill its mission in a variety of ways, including:
  • Bringing attention to issues faced by Latin American, Caribbean, and Latina/o/e/x communities and individuals.
  • Actively promoting academic experiences that will increase well-rounded knowledge of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Latinx U.S.
  • Fostering opportunities to build community.

Commitment to Social Justice
LACLAS sees as one of its driving forces its commitment to the fundamental principles of social justice and the fostering of an environment of tolerance, understanding, opportunity, and belonging. We fulfill this commitment by:
  • Opening spaces for distinct voices and generative dialogues.
  • Advocating for responsible global citizenship.
  • Establishing relationships with other like-minded departments and programs across campus and beyond.

The Latin American, Caribbean, & Latinx Studies program at Skidmore College, in conjunction with other programs on campus and many academic institutions across the nation, reaffirms its commitment to the fundamental principles of social justice. Given the current political climate and the real threat to the safety and well-being of immigrants and their families, we are pleased that President Philip A. Glotzbach signed the statement in support of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). See the petition here: http://www.pomona.edu/support-daca.
